Australian designer, Emma Elizabeth Coffey has made waves on the international design scene and shares with the Maison Instyle team her thoughts on the Australian interiors industry and her personal design ethos…
What does great design mean to you?
I have always lived by the ethos “Design is nothing without style and style is nothing without design”, great design allows you to style the perfect space.
What will an event like Maison Instyle mean to the interiors industry?
Events like Maison Instyle bring the industry together to create and celebrate design with like minded fabulous people.
What colours do you think will be on trend in 2012?
Bright primary colours I think will be a strong focus this year, steering away from neutral and muddy tones.
What was your biggest fashion faux pas?
Not dressing to please myself has been my biggest faux pas, fashion is just an extension of ones creativity, if you dress to convention and not your individual instinct I feel this is ones biggest fashion faux pas.
Apart from Maison Instyle, what will be the next big thing in interiors in 2012?
Milan Design Week is always a highlight on my interior calendar, I am looking forward to the show this year as I will be exhibiting my new range of rugs and ottomans at Ventura Lambrate as well as scouting the show for unique designs.
What is/was your favourite piece of furniture ever?
Gaetano Pesce UP5 Chair and UP6 Ottoman designed in 1969 for B&B Italia, it was created to symbolize “the shackles that keep women subjugated”.
In three words, sum up the Australian interiors industry.
Individual, Brave , Empowered
What inspires you?
The world around me
What blogs or magazines do you read on a regular basis?

What challenges face the Australian interior design industry in 2012?
We are strongly challenged at present in regards to the appalling design legislation that allows Australia to still be one of the only countries in the world where replica furniture is publicly sold and endorsed. It is such a huge slap in the face for design in this country and to be honest I feel this is why Australia still does not have a design week on the international calendar, each year I pray that this will one day change.
