Steven Cordony, Interior Design Editor for Belle magazine talks to Maison Instyle about his thoughts on design and the Australian design industry.  

What does great design mean to you?

The most successful designs not only have to look amazing but also function well. The use of interesting and innovative materials is also important.

What will an event like Maison Instyle mean to the interiors industry?

Maison Instyle will bring the highest calibre of design and interiors, only seen internationally, to our shores which is so exciting.

What colours do you think will be on trend in 2012?

I definitely think that muted tones and pastels will be celebrated this year as well as looking to nature for inspiration. Grey is also the new black and the perfect backdrop to any scheme.

What was your biggest fashion faux pas?

In terms of personal fashion – overalls.

In terms of interior fashion – any form of faux fur animal print!

Apart from Maison Instyle, what will be the next big thing in interiors in 2012?

I think the return to decoration and embellishment will continue in 2012 and blending expensive ‘design’ pieces with found, recycled or more inexpensive design offers an interesting balance in any interior.

What is/was your favourite piece of furniture ever?

The Atollo lamp by Oluce has always been my favorite of mine and the Mette table by Mattermade is on my wish list.

Vibrant, innovative and humorous

What inspires you?

Fashion is a definite constant source of inspiration for me as is trolling through amazing blogs.

Magazines – belle (of course) Wallpaper, Elle Décor Italia (not reading, just looking at the pretty pictures!) and World of Interiors

What challenges face the Australian interior design industry in 2012?

I think economical fear tends to hold back creative expression and design.
